This week in Christian history: United Methodist Building opened, Saint Abo martyred
Saint Abo martyred – Jan. 6, 786
This week marks the anniversary of when Saint Abo, a perfumer from Baghdad who converted from Islam to Christianity, was martyred for his faith in the nation of Georgia at age 30.
Also known as Abo of Tiflis, Saint Abo was a professional perfumer who moved to Georgia when the Eastern European country was conquered by Islamic armies and was a fixture in elite circles because of his profession.
Abo reportedly converted following several debates with local clergy, being baptized in 779. He spent three years preaching in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi before he was arrested and executed by local authorities.
“On the day of his execution Abo washed his face, anointed it with holy oil, partook of the Holy Gifts, and prepared for his death as though preparing for a feast,” recounted the Orthodox Church in America.
“The executioners swung their swords three times in hopes of frightening Abo into denying Christ, but the blessed Abo stood unyielding until his last breath. Finally, convinced that all their efforts and cunning were in vain, the executioners were given a sign and they beheaded the holy Abo.”
