Three Bodies Found on Farm: Police Seek Person of Interest, Vehicle
Three bodies have been discovered on a farm in eastern Kansas after neighbors noticed a foul odor coming from the site. Police say the bodies of two adult men and one woman were located on Monday, approximately 60 miles southwest of Kansas City.
Kortni McGill told the Associated Press that she and friends Corey Schlotzhauer and Shona Osladil went to the farm on Monday and, after looking into the garage, saw a tarp covering a dead body that was weighed down with a cinder block. McGill originally went to the farm on Sunday to check on a friend she hadn't heard from since April 25.
On Sunday, McGill and Schlotzhauer went into the home to see if they could locate their friend. They noticed a strange, foul odor coming from inside the home and called authorities, who later dismissed it as garbage. The police then looked inside the garage, where there was also a foul odor, but they dismissed that as garbage as well and left.
Undeterred, the two returned on Monday to continue investigating. That's when they found the tarp, which had a pile of baby clothes on top and a body underneath. Police were called and investigated the scene and found a burn barrel that contained baby clothes, a baby bottle, and a sleeping bag.
"I reached down and saw teeth through the square in the cinder block. I said, 'Corey, there's a body here,'" McGill told the AP.
Police are currently investigating to see if the body is that of Kaylie Bailey, 21, and her daughter Lana. The two were reported missing on Friday; Bailey had apparently planned to drop her daughter off with the baby's father, the owner of the house, on Wednesday.
"We are waiting for confirmation that it may or may not be Kaylie, and once we know, it will determine what direction we go from there," Olathe Police Sgt. Brad Caldwell told the AP.
The little girl, who is 18 months old, is still missing, but no Amber Alert has been issued since she doesn't meet the criteria, Caldwell explained.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is also involved in the case and announced that they are seeking to speak with Kyle Flack, whom they have named as a person of interest in the case. They are also looking for a 2007 black Toyota Corolla with Kansas license plates 618 DAA.
According to Sheriff Jeff Richards, Flack was released from prison last month after serving time for a 2005 attempted second-degree murder conviction. Richards refused to release any other details, such as why Flack may be a suspect in the case.
"This is three homicides on one very large scene," Richards said during a news conference. "We have more than 40 detectives here with various agencies to investigate this crime. The manner of death is going to be important to this investigation, so I don't want to reveal anything that might be crucial to helping us solve this case."
