Tiger Woods News: Golfing Champ Drops Out of Top 50 World Ranking
The legendary Tiger Woods is out of the top 50 world ranking in golf for the first time in 15 years.
Woods, who has not been his stellar self in close to two years, was assured of dropping from the top 50 when Louis Oosthuizen finished in a three-ways tie for fifth in the Dunhill Links Championship on Sunday at St. Andrews, Scotland, according to the Los Angeles Times.
This ends an amazing streak of 778 consecutive weeks inside the top 50, dating to when Woods was No. 61 on Oct. 13, 1996.
After Struggling initially following his divorce from Elin Nordegren, Woods made a comeback of sorts at the Barclays Golf Tournament last year, where he made an impressive seven birdies to finish with his best round up until then.
Over the past year, his game has been inconsistent at best, and recently, beset by leg and knee injuries, his playing has taken a turn for the worse. He addressed his injuries in June on his website:
"I am extremely disappointed that I won't be playing in the U.S. Open, but it's time for me to listen to my doctors and focus on the future. I was hopeful that I could play, but if I did, I risk further damage to my left leg. My knee and Achilles tendon are not fully healed."
Woods' friend tennis star Roger Federer told the Associated Press (AP), "It's hard to follow, because you know what an athlete wants to do. He wants to be out there and compete and that's what he's not able to do with his injuries right now."
"It's been tough for him the last year. He knows that," Federer added. "It's been hard to watch. I only wish him the best."
Woods' impressive career began to nosedive following personal problems which involved the scandal of marital infidelity, divorce, and a very public mea culpa.
