Timeline of events that led to Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade
Dobbs opinion released – June 24, 2022
Affirming what many suspected would be the end result, the Supreme Court releases the final opinion in the Dobbs case, officially overturning Roe and Casey.
The six-justice majority included all three Trump appointees, two of whom had replaced justices known for supporting the Roe precedent of preventing states from banning abortions.
The Supreme Court concluded that the U.S. Constitution did not protect the right to an abortion, and as such, states should be allowed to legalize or ban the practice as they see fit.
With the 1973 precedent overturned, several states quickly moved to ban abortion save for life-threatening medical emergencies, while other states increased their restrictions.
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a statement released the day of the ruling that the pro-life struggle was just beginning.
“Over the next few years we will have the opportunity to save hundreds of thousands, even millions of lives by limiting the horror of abortion in many states,” said Dannenfelser.
“In this mission of justice and mercy, we redouble our commitment to women and families – building on a pro-life safety net that includes 2,700 pregnancy centers nationwide and initiatives like SBA Pro-Life America’s Her PLAN, as well as a growing number of state Alternatives to Abortion programs, in order to love and serve both mother and child.”
