Tina Campbell Postpones Tour Due to Low Sales Amid Backlash for Trump Support
Tina Campbell has had to postpone her tour due to low ticket sales weeks after receiving backlash for revealing that she voted for President Donald Trump.
Campbell, one half of the gospel music duo Mary Mary, announced that her "It's Still Personal" tour would be pushed back from the fall to spring 2018 in hopes that she would receive more support that would translate into ticket sales. After thanking those who did purchase tickets in an Instagram message on Tuesday, the singer was transparent about the postponement of her tour.
"We are grateful for those who were planning to attend but our overall ticket sales haven't shown that we have the support that we need to continue the tour at this time," the post says. "We're convinced that many more would love the opportunity to attend this praise filled, faith filled, entertaining, worship experience, so we have decided to give ourselves time to reach all of those people and bring this amazing tour back in the spring of 2018. We hope to see you then."
The announcement comes after multiple people have spoken out against Campbell on social media following her transparent conversations about voting for Trump. Last month, she opened up to The Root about her reason for giving Trump her vote.
"I was faced with two presidential candidates that I really did not approve of. So I had to find something, a commonality with one of them, that would make me feel like if I have to vote, I should utilize my right to vote," she explained. "Since I don't prefer either of them, what can I find that would make me vote? And some of Donald Trump's views on Christianity, honestly, is what caused me to vote for him."
While her sister and fellow Mary Mary member Erica Campbell does not share the same support for Trump, she still supported Tina's perspective.
"I appreciate my sister's boldness. This is America," Erica said on her syndicated radio show "Get Up! Mornings with Erica Campbell," according to Hello Beautiful. "We should be free to say what we want, and not be vilified or bashed."
Even though some have stopped supporting Tina, Erica made it clear that God was still supporting her sister.
"I do know this, to those who say she's cancelled, God gave [Tina] her gift, and whether you buy her record or not, God put her there," she said. "It's not your position to say what she can or can't, will or will not, move forward and progress [and] be great. Because we all disagree sometimes."
Tina and Erica appear in the sixth and final season of their series "Mary Mary" at 9 p.m. ET Thursday on WeTV.
