Toddler Loses Legs in Lawnmower Accident (VIDEO)
A 2-and-a-half year old girl became a triple amputee after her father accidentally ran her over with the lawnmower. She was immediately flown to Tampa General Hospital for treatment while her parents are being treated for hysteria.
According to reports, the little girl ran out in front of her father, who was on a riding lawnmower. She slipped and fell, and her father did not notice, nor did he see or hear his wife yelling at him, trying to get him to stop.
Unfortunately, he was not able to stop in time and ran over the child, dragging her down the driveway and into the street. When he finally stopped and saw what had happened, he wrapped his daughter in a towel and called 911. She was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital and is expected to survive, though her limbs were unable to be reattached.
"She suffered from immediate amputations to both legs below the knees and partial amputation on her hand," Palm Harbor Fire Rescue said in a press release.
The father will not be charged with anything, as investigators have deemed the incident a very tragic accident.
Fortunately, there are people already willing to help the little girl get back on her feet. According to at least one person's report, Steve Chamberland, founder of 50 Legs, has said he will do whatever it takes to help the girl receive and learn how to use her prosthetic limbs.
Chamberland was a wrestler who lost his own leg; he became devoted to "helping other children amputees." His goal is to share 50 prosthetic legs with 50 kids. He works with a doctor who specializes in prosthetics and has gained national attention for his work.
A child could need a new prosthetic every year due to growth and excessive use, according to the 50Legs.org, Chamberland's website. To learn more about 50Legs or to help, click here.
