Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions have yet to release information on who the director for the next film will be, with the assumption the studios are looking to go in a different direction for the franchise.

Christopher McQuarrie, who helmed another of Cruise's starrers, "Jack Reacher," directed "Rogue Nation" to generally favorable reviews from preview critics, and Joss Whedon, who directed Marvel's "The Avengers" and its sequel "Avengers: Age of Ultron" has been mentioned as a possible filmmaker to helm the sixth film.

Paramount has already announced that Cruise, J.J. Abrams, David Ellison, and Dana Goldberg will be returning to produce the sequel.

The sixth film is likely scheduled to hit theaters in 2017, with less time between movies than there had been when the franchise first launched in 1996, followed by "Mission Impossible II" four years later, and "Mission Impossible III" six years after that.

The "Mission Impossible" franchise has earned a total of $739 million in the U.S. alone, and over $2 billion from the worldwide box office.

"Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation," which cost $150 million to film will be opening not only in the U.S. at the start of the weekend, but in 40 other international markets, including the U.K., Australia, South Korea, and Mexico.
