Tom Hanks Broadway Debut in Nora Ephron Play 'The Lucky Guy'
Tom Hanks will make his first Broadway debut next spring in a new play titled "Lucky Guy" about a former New York journalist.
Tom Hanks will appear in a new Broadway show next year written by Nora Ephron. Ephron also wrote popular titles like "Sleepless in Seatlle" and "When Harry Met Sally." It was announced Thursday that Hanks would play Mike McAlary, a daring newspaper columnist.
The play will be a biography about the character that Hanks will play, with producer Colin Callender, according to a Newsday report.
"We are honored to be part of her legacy and remain committed to seeing her magnificent work 'Lucky Guy' shine on Broadway," Callender said in a statement.
Ephron died this past June of pneumonia after suffering from myeloid leukemia. She was 71 years old. Previews of the show will begin March 1 at the Broadhurst Theatre with opening night set for April 1.
McAlary was, at one time, a dominant tabloid reporter in New York City. He gained public attention after getting the first interview with Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant who was sodomized and beaten by white police officers in 1997.
McAlary worked for both the New York Daily News and the New York Post. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his work in 1998 but died from colon cancer only a few months later on Christmas day.
A second play has already been written about McAlary, titled "The Wood." A drama about McAlary's life, it was written by playwright Dan Klores and premiered at Manhattan's Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in August, 2011.
