Tony Romo and Wife Are Expecting First Child
When a high-school student asked Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo if has any children, no one was expecting a revelation this big.
“Um, no, I don’t have any kids,” the 31-year-old told an auditorium full of students at Cedar Hill High School near Dallas on Tuesday. Then, after a pause, “I’ve actually got one on the way. My wife’s pregnant.”
A Fox News video shows the crowd erupting into enthusiastic cheers-and Romo responding by pumping his fist and saying, “It’ll be fun.”
Romo and his 24-year-old wife, Candice Crawford, have been married for five months. Crawford is a sports journalist and former Miss USA contestant. Their child is due in March.
In six seasons as starting quarterback, Romo led Dallas to three post-season appearances but only one playoff victory. And that prized Superbowl ring has remained elusive. Critics have pointed to distractions in his personal life-including a much publicized romance with singer Jessica Simpson from 2007-2009-as a possible reason for the Cowboys’ lackluster performance.
But happy news on the home front may give Romo and his 3-3 Cowboys some extra support as they head to Philadelphia for a critical showdown on Sunday against NFC East rival, the Eagles. And Romo will need every advantage he can get against Philadelphia’s explosive quarterback, Michael Vick.
But Vick isn’t the only challenge ahead for Romo. The quarterback took painkilling injections in his last four NFL games after fracturing a rib on September 18th in a win over the San Fancisco 49ers. ESPNDallas.com reported that Romo hopes last Sunday’s shot will be the last of his season. Romo performed well enough in that game to lead his team to a 34-7 victory over the St. Louis Rams.
“It felt more comfortable, if that makes sense,” Romo told ESPNDallas.com. “You know you can take a hit when your ribs are broken and deal with it, but I think by next week they’ll be good to go without the shot.”
Romo’s football career started at Burlington High School in Wisconsin. He went on to play for Eastern Illinois University and joined the Cowboys as a walk-on in 2003.
