Tony Romo Trade Rumors 2017: Cowboys Still Holding Romo Hostage
Since Tony Romo and Dallas Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones are supposed to be such good friends, a lot of people thought the team would release the veteran quarterback at the start of free agency so he could sign with the team of his choice. Well, that obviously didn't happen.
Maybe Romo should have waited until he was officially released before he said goodbye to the fans because things got pretty awkward when the Cowboys decided to hold him hostage.
But why are the Cowboys doing this? Here's a good explanation from ESPN's Kevin Seifert.
"It's presumed that there are two leading contenders for Romo's services: The Houston Texans and Denver Broncos, probably in that order. Perhaps one of them will get antsy and offer a draft pick to secure him now. Other than Jay Cutler, there isn't a quarterback on the free-agent market who would project as a likely starter. And if either of those teams preferred Cutler, they probably would have signed him by now," Seifert stated.
The problem here is that both the Houston Texans and the Denver Broncos are not interested in trading for Romo and they will probably wait until the Cowboys release the quarterback. The Broncos are not going to panic because they have two young quarterbacks in Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch, but the Texans don't really have anyone who can start since they got rid of Brock Osweiler. Can the Cowboys pressure the Texans to make a move?
ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio has even theorized that Jones doesn't really want the Texans to acquire Romo. That's why they have decided not to release him when the free agency period began two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Chron.com's Aaron Wilson has reported that Jones would not make a decision on the Romo situation until he meets Texans owner Bob McNair and general manager Rick Smith at the National Football League (NFL) owners meetings next week.
