The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was arguably the most anticipated Android smartphone of 2011. A reason for this is that the Nexus was the device that launched Google’s brand new Android software, Ice Cream Sandwich. The Nexus launched on Dec. 15 on Verizon and has already received rave reviews.

It also includes some impressive hardware such as a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, a 4.65-inch high-definition Super AMOLED display, 1GB of RAM, 4G LTE support, NFC (near field communication) and a 5-megapixel rear camera.

Samsung Galaxy S2

Next up is the Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphone also known as the “iPhone killer.” The S2 is currently one of the best selling smartphones and is available on three major carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. The T-Mobile and Sprint versions sport a 4.52-inch screen, while the AT&T version has a 4.3-inch display. However, AT&T’s LTE variant of the device known as the Skyrocket sports a 4.5-inch screen.

Other specs on the S2 include a 1.5GHz or 1.2GHz dual-core processor depending the version along with an 8-megapixel camera. It comes with Gingerbread OS, and should be able to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich early next year.

Motorola Droid Razr

The Motorola Droid Razr is a 4G LTE smartphone that launched on Verizon on Nov.11. It is said to be the world’s thinnest smartphone and resurrected the name of one of the most popular cell phones of all time.

Its specs include a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, a body made from KEVLAR and Gorilla Glass, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front camera. It currently runs on Gingerbread and should update to Ice Cream Sandwich early next year.

HTC Vivid

The HTC Vivid sports a classy design and an impressive display. It is not quite on par with the first three Android devices, but it still proved to be a contender in the Android market.

The HTC Vivid launched on AT&T as one of the carrier’s first LTE devices alongside the Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. It includes 1GB of RAM, a 4.5-inch qHD display, and 8-megapixel dual-LED flash camera and 16 or 32GB of internal memory that can be expanded with the use of its microSD slot.

LG Nitro HD

The LG Nitro HD recently launched on AT&T and is one of the carrier’s first devices with a true high definition screen. By taking advantage of its new proprietary, True HD technology, the Nitro’s 4.5-inch display can show beautiful video and makes the device perfect for viewing movies and gaming.

Other specs on the Nitro include a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel rear camera capable of filming in 1080p HD. It also makes for a great camera to shoot video with.
