'Torment: Tides of Numenera' News: Developers Reveal Story Trailer Introducing the 'Last Castoff'
The developers of "Torment: Tides of Numenera" recently revealed the latest story trailer of the upcoming game that provides an introduction of the Last Castoff.
"Torment: Tides of Numenera" is a story-driven role-playing game developed as a successor to the 1999 title "Planescape: Torment." Shortly after the game's announcement in March 2013, developers were able to gather wide support through crowdfunding and were able to get as much as $4 million.
Now, a few weeks before its retail release, developer inXile Entertainment unveiled a story-packed and highly cinematic trailer that boils down to the introduction of the game's main playable role, the Last Castoff.
Players will have to assume the role of one of the Changing God's creations, the Last Castoff, who was born amid the looming rise of The Sorrow. Apparently, this is where the gameplay will also revolve.
The trailer opens up by introducing the Cheater of Death. With the goal to make a lifetime mark, the Cheater of Death formulated a way, through "ancient technology," to transfer his consciousness from one body to another.
Being able to transfer from one creation to another, the Cheater of Death was later on known as the Changing God – "one who lives from life to life, without end." However, there was one complication that the Changing God did not foresee. The bodies left by his consciousness do not really die and are called "Castoffs." A Castoff gains a whole new independent consciousness after the Changing God goes to another body.
The game's story then encounters a turning point and becomes more interesting with the introduction of The Sorrow, which inXile describes by saying: "In a bid to escape death, the Changing God inadvertently awakened a fearsome, ancient beast known as The Sorrow – a terrifyingly powerful guardian of balance, bent on destroying the Changing God and all of his Castoffs."
The trailer gives players more things to look forward to since the video cuts off after stating that the last Castoff's death may seem inevitable but its fate relies on the gamers.
"Torment: Tides of Numenera" will be released on Feb. 28 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Linux, MacOS and PC.
