Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings NHL Trade Rumors: Leafs Eyeing Red Wings' Riley Sheahan
Looks like Brendan Smith isn't the only Detroit Red Wings player who is garnering a lot of attention on the trade market. With the trade deadline approaching, negotiations are starting to heat up and forward Riley Sheahan is reportedly getting a lot of looks from teams interested in acquiring his services.
TSN's Darren Dreger has reported that three to four teams have expressed interest in Sheahan and the Toronto Maple Leafs happens to be one of them. The forward is struggling this season, but he's not going to come cheap. So, what can teams like the Leafs offer to make the Red Wings consider trading Sheahan?
According to Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos, teams might have to give up a first-round draft pick for Sheahan. Ansar Khan of MLive.com also said the Red Wings wants a high draft pick in return for the forward. Is Sheahan even worth a first-round pick?
A lot of observers think that's an absurd asking price and they are having a hard time understanding why the Leafs are targeting a player who is going through a historic goal-scoring drought (58 games and counting).
"Riley Sheahan is not a fit for the Maple Leafs. Not on any planet. He simply just isn't good enough to justify giving up any asset to bring him in. The Leafs can easily ice a player just as bad without making any move at all." Editor In Leaf's Tim Chiasson said in his piece about the rumors.
"He makes sense from a hockey perspective and would be an upgrade over Ben Smith or Frederik Gauthier on the fourth line, but the asking price of a first-rounder is laughable," Chris Okrainetz of Tip of the Tower said.
The Red Wings will have a hard time finding any takers if that's their asking price, but anything can still happen between now and the trade deadline.
