'Total War: Warhammer II': Gameplay Adds Four New Races; Devs Clarify Historical-Themed Project is Different

The upcoming sequel game "Total War: Warhammer II" from Creative Assembly has been confirmed to be arriving with four new playable races. On the other hand, developers clarified that the said game is a separate project from another historical-themed title that is in the pipeline.

Late last month, Creative Assembly presented the newest trailer for "Total War: Warhammer II" at the EGX Rezzed event in London. The developers subsequently talked with Eurogamer about the gameplay features of the upcoming sequel.

The video announcement confirmed that developers are adding four new races to the upcoming game. However, the trailer only featured three of them, which are the High Elves, Dark Elves, and Lizardmen.

"Total War: Warhammer" game director Ian Roxburgh told Eurogamer in an interview: "Ultimately, each of the races will have various mechanics to be able to cast rituals. ... Some of the races want to keep it in its integrity and some want to destabilise it so they can use the chaos that ensues to their own nefarious end."

On the other hand, Creative Assembly has also announced recently that they are working on another historical title. The statement came closely after the first reveal of the "Total War: Warhammer II." Understandably, it had fans thinking that they are the same thing, which stirred concern among the fan-base in terms of the direction that the franchise is taking.

However, Creative Assembly quickly addressed the confusion through another statement released more recently that discusses the studio's perspective on their historical titles.

In the statement, Creative Assembly's Michael Whelan wrote that "the Historical sub-teams split out exactly as the Historical and WARHAMMER teams are." He added, "Specifically, we have recently been looking at ways in which we might get back to historical content before we release the next major historical Total War, in particular thinking about additional content or standalones for some of our more recent historical titles."

Whelan also shared that for the first time, the studio is working with a historical advisor to provide input on their research and game design, noting that what they want to bring to their projects is "an era that we haven't tackled yet."

Based on the video teaser mentioned, "Total War: Warhammer II" is slated to be released this year.
