Trend: Abortion on the Decline, Life on the Rise

The times are changing as the American youth is waking up to the truths of abortion. Tomorrow, on the day marking the 32nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, thousands of American youth will be marching coast-to-coast to promote the sanctity of life.

Critical events often set the trend for the future direction of a culture. Thirty two years ago, one critical case at the Supreme Court set the nation off in a dark direction where women began depending on the surgeon’s knife to “eliminate” their unwanted unborn child, and America’s “pro-life” identity withered under the pro-choice façade of “freedom” and “rights”.

Thankfully, it seems the trend is changing.

Earlier this week, Norma McCorvey, also known as “Jane Roe” in the infamous Roe v. Wade case that first legalized abortion in America three decades ago, pleaded with the high court to reverse the ruling made in her favor. After working at an abortion clinic for years, McCorvey said she realized that the effects of abortion are deep, long-lasting, negative and tragic. She spoke of the torment she lived through after her surgery, and compiled the nightmarish testimonies of dozens of women who suffered psychological, emotional and physical impairments after their “choice”.

Even if the high court chooses to dismiss her case, as did two lower courts last year, and even if abortion on-demand continues to be legalized, the outlook for the future of America is positive because the trend is changing. More and more women are sharing the thoughts of the new “Jane Roe,” and more importantly, the American youth is beginning to move back toward the center and right on this critical issue.

Tomorrow, the day marking the 32nd anniversary of the critical case case, pro-life youth organizations will lead the nation in demonstrations, prayers and marches against abortion, coast to coast.

The east-coast demonstration will be at the Planned Parenthood clinic located at 1108 16th st. NW in Washington D.C. The organizers will then walk to the Supreme Court to conduct a 12 noon prayer vigil.

Brandi Swindell, National director of Generation Life, and one of the organizers of the event, explained the changes that have occurred over the past several years within the American youth.

"A Gallup poll taken in August of 2003 found that 72 percent of American teens believe abortion is immoral. That number is twice as high as those who are over 50 years old. It is clear that my generation life will not longer tolerate violence against innocent children and the exploitation of women through abortion,” said Swindell. “We are going to the streets of Washington, D.C. on the Roe vs. Wade Memorial to proclaim to the nation, 'You cannot silence our message and you will stop killing our generation.' We will not rest until we bring the horror of abortion comes to a screeching halt."

Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition and nationally known pro-life leader agreed that the times are changing.

"I have never been more optimistic about ending abortion than I am today. The reason is simple. Millions of young people are rejecting their parents' view of abortion and embracing a pro-life position,” said Mahoney. “Their message to pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood, the National Organization for Women and NARAL is clear; 'We will no longer accept your lies to our generation or your violence against it.'"

On the west coast, thousands of pro-lifers of all age are expected to rally and march along San Francisco’s waterfront to show that “WOMEN DESERVE BETTER than abortion.” The rally, which begins at 11 a.m. (PST) at Market Street and Embarcadero, is the first of its kind on the California shore.

"Abortion hurts women. There are people who honestly believe abortion is a way to help women, but we are here to say women pay a terrible price for this false choice," said Dolores Meehan, Walk for Life West Coast co-chair and a fourth generation San Franciscan.

People from the Bay area and from as far as Texas and Colorado will gather to hear messages from dozens of leaders who put “women and life first”, according to organizers.

Among the speakers is Winn Forney, a woman who had an abortion in high school, and is now leading an Episcopalian pro-life group called NOEL.

"We refuse to choose between women and children. Abortion is a reflection that we have not met the needs of women. Women deserve better. Like Susan B. Anthony, we must systematically eliminate the root causes that drive women to abortion," said Forney.

Rev. Childress, an African American Baptist minister, said, "Each day 1,452 African American children are killed by the heinous act of abortion. Women who have been deceived into wrong choices and children who were never given any choice at all are the victims of pro-choice America."

These pro-life movements coincide with a new research from the Beverly LaHaye Institute – the think tank of Concerned Women for America, which indicates that abortion rates are on the decline especially among younger women.

This newly released report shows that women over age 25 are having the largest share of abortions. The data indicate that the number of women having repeat abortions is increasing (some four or more) and more abortions are being performed on women who have previously had a live birth.

Dr. Janice Crouse, author of the report and senior fellow of CWA’s Beverly LaHaye Institute, said, “The demographics of abortion have changed dramatically over recent years. These data reveal that abortion is becoming a means of birth control for older women. Nearly half of all abortions today are repeat abortions, and 60 percent of all abortions are to women who have previously had a live birth.”

She added, “Proponents of abortion like to portray it as a desperate choice of a young girl who made a mistake, but this study shows a staggering and appalling picture of experienced and worldly-wise women refusing to alter their lifestyle and using abortion to cover their reckless and self-centered behavior.”
