Trevecca Nazarene University inaugurated its 11th president this month following the retirement of Millard C. Reed, Treveccas president since 1991.
The investiture of Dan L. Boone on Nov. 4 was conducted by Larry D. Dennis, chairperson of the Trevecca Board of Trustees. It was followed by the transfer of the chain of command from President Reed to Dr. Boone. The chain composed of links on which are engraved the names of Treveccas former presidents is worn by Treveccas president for official ceremonies.
In his inaugural address/challenge, Boone noted that new presidents are supposed to come prepared with new plans, new initiatives. The new president, however, asserted that he is not interested in the newness that is merely novel.
I am not interested in newness that is disconnected from history, tradition, and ancestors. This newness is cheap and gimmicky, Boone said in an announcement released by Trevecca.
I am interested in the God who makes all things new.
Later Boone concluded with his vision for Trevecca stating that Trevecca exists to be useful to the purposes of God in this present age.
God is at work right now, making all things new, the new president exhorted. We are called to participate in this work. The Trevecca experience is not measured by a head filled with knowledge, but by a life shaped for meaningful service. Trevecca graduates will go into the world, filled with the Spirit of God, rooted in the wisdom of our ancestors, mentored by caring professors, sustained by lifelong friendships, and skilled in specific practices. And we will do our work in the name of Jesus, the one who makes all things new.
Prior to accepting the presidency of Trevecca, Boone had been the senior pastor of the following Churches of the Nazarene: New Salem, Mississippi; Raleigh, North Carolina; Trevecca Community Church of the Nazarene in Nashville, Tennessee; and College Church of the Nazarene in Bourbonnais, Illinois.
In addition to being a 1974 graduate of Trevecca, Boone is also a graduate of Nazarene Theological Seminary and McCormick Theological Seminary.
