'True Detective' Cast News: Woody Harrelson Not Open to Returning

"Solo: A Star Wars Story" star Woody Harrelson starred with Matthew McConaughey in "True Detective" season 1 on HBO. The actor recently revealed he's not interested in returning to the show for one simple reason.

McConaughey and Harrelson did "True Detective" in 2014, which received critical praises. The series earned several Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations, including Outstanding Lead Actor for both stars.

Despite the success of the anthology series, Harrelson told Yahoo Entertainment he would not want to revisit and reprise his role. The actor played Detective Marty Hart opposite McConaughey's Rust Cohle.

"It went very well the first time and if I come back around to it, what else are you going to hear but, 'Not as good! Just wasn't as good...Because boy, you guys were good before, but this time...'" Harrelson said. "I don't want to even hear that."

Harrelson knew what he was talking about because the second season of "True Detective" in 2015, which starred Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch, bombed with viewers. It received too many criticisms for being the complete opposite of the first season.

Meanwhile, unlike Harrelson, McConaughey expressed his willingness to play his character all over again if asked. He told "The Rich Eisen Show" in 2016 that doing "True Detective" made him happy and fulfilled.

"I miss Rust Cohle, man. I miss watching him on Sunday nights. I miss watching True Detective on Sunday nights," McConaughey said. "I was a happy man when we made that for six months, because I was on my own island."

The news comes as HBO and shows creator Nic Pizzolatto is planning "True Detective" season 3. HBO hired Mahershala Ali to lead the series fresh from his Oscar win.

No additional details have been revealed for the rest of the cast as well as the season's director. HBO has also not yet plotted the filming schedule and premiere date.
