'True Detective' Season 3 News: How Latest Details About Show Makes Matthew McConaughey Return Possible
"True Detective" season 3 continues to take shape with Mahershala Ali and Carmen Ejogo locked in as leads. Now, there are talks that Matthew McConaughey might be joining the duo.
Fans will remember that when the fate of the show was still hanging in the balance, the actor expressed interest to reprise his role as Rustin Cohle from the critically acclaimed first season.
McConaughey says that he misses playing the character. With what has been revealed so far about "True Detective" season 3, Carter Matt believes he could end up taking part in it.
It was recently revealed that the new season is set in the Ozarks, which the publication says is not that far from Louisiana, where Cohle is based.
The media outlet pitches that the detective could be written in as someone who worked with the new characters in the past or better yet, be brought in to help on a case being dealt with in "True Detective" season 3.
This is unlikely to mess with the show's nature as an anthology too. It is the same vein as how "American Horror Story" creator Ryan Murphy manages to bring back characters from older seasons.
For now, however, nothing is set in stone yet. McConaughey's co-star in the first season, Woody Harrelson, says that it might not be a good idea to get a second go at "True Detective."
In an interview with Yahoo, the actor said that it is risking tainting the legacy of the original:
I don't see doing that [again]. Because it went very well the first time and [if I] come back around to it, what else are you going to hear but, "Not as good! Just wasn't as good. Boy, you guys were good before, but this time..." I don't want to even hear that.
At the moment, McConaughey is just excited to watch "True Detective" season 3, describing Ali's casting as "good news":
That was a great idea to cast Mahershala. That's good for "True Detective," and it's good for Mahershala. Nic [Pizzolatto's] writing is gonna be something that Mahershala will be very grounded in and bring to life. I'm excited to see what happens.
