Trump, Kari Lake oppose Arizona abortion ruling while pro-life leaders praise it
Kari Lake
Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake denounced the Arizona law in a Tuesday statement, promising potential voters that she plans to leave the abortion issue to the states. The candidate also vowed that, if elected, she would oppose federal bans on abortion, in addition to opposing federal funding.
Citing her experience as a journalist and the time spent talking with people on the campaign trail, Lake asserted that the "pre-statehood law is out of step with Arizonans."
"I am the only woman and mother in this race. I understand the fear and anxiety of pregnancy, and the joy of motherhood. I wholeheartedly agree with President Trump — this is a very personal issue that should be determined by each individual state and her people," the Republican candidate stated.
"I oppose today's ruling, and I am calling on Katie Hobbs and the State Legislature to come up with an immediate common sense solution that Arizonans can support," she added. "Ultimately, Arizona voters will make the decision on the ballot come November."
Lake outlined the policies she plans to support if elected senator, including paid family leave and child tax credit extensions. Lake vowed to protect in vitro ferilization and work to improve the economy "so that Mothers can AFFORD a baby."
As The New York Times reported Wednesday, Lake previously expressed support for Arizona's law during a 2022 interview on "The Conservative Circus With James T. Harris."
"I'm incredibly thrilled that we are going to have a great law that's already on the books. I believe it's ARS 13-3603," Lake said in response to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
