Trump, Kari Lake oppose Arizona abortion ruling while pro-life leaders praise it
Attorney General Kris Mayes
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, said in a Tuesday statement that she would not allow for the prosecution of women and doctors under what she described as a "draconian law."
"The decision made by the Arizona Supreme Court today is unconscionable and an affront to freedom. Make no mistake, by effectively striking down a law passed this century and replacing it with one from 160 years ago, the Court has risked the health and lives of Arizonans," Mayes said. "The Arizona Court of Appeals decision, which the Supreme Court has struck down today, was well reasoned and aligned with how courts harmonize different legislation."
She also took issue with the law being from the Civil War period before Arizona became a state in 1912. Mayes asserted that the Arizona Supreme Court's decision "will go down in history as a stain in our state."
"This is far from the end of the debate on reproductive freedom, and I look forward to the people of Arizona having their say in the matter," Mayes concluded. "And let me be completely clear, as long as I am Attorney General, no woman or doctor will be prosecuted under this draconian law in this state."
