4. Trump speaks with Putin and Zelensky

Trump spoke with the leaders of both Ukraine and Russia this week as the U.S. continues to work toward a deal that would bring the conflict that began with Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine to a halt.

In a statement Tuesday, Trump described a phone call he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin as "a very good and productive one."

"We agreed to an immediate Ceasefire on all Energy and Infrastructure, with an understanding that we will be working quickly to have a Complete Ceasefire and, ultimately, an END to this very horrible War between Russia and Ukraine." Explaining that "Many elements of a Contract for Peace were discussed," Trump maintained that such a "process is now in full force and effect."

In a subsequent statement on Wednesday, Trump noted that he had "just completed a very good telephone call with President [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy of Ukraine."

"It lasted approximately one hour," the president added. "Much of the discussion was based on the call made yesterday with President Putin in order to align both Russia and Ukraine in terms of their requests and needs. We are very much on track."

In a statement published Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz provided additional details about the contents of the call. The summary noted that Trump and Zelensky discussed the former's call with Putin the day before.

Asserting that Trump and Zelensky "agreed on a partial ceasefire against energy," the statement discussed how "Technical teams will meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days to discuss broadening the ceasefire to the Black Sea on the way to a full ceasefire." Rubio and Waltz mentioned that Trump and Zelensky "agreed this could be the first step toward the full end of the war and ensuring security."
