Tyson Fury News: Heavyweight World Champion Says MMA Is For "People Who Can't Box"
World heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury was candid about his thoughts on his contemporaries in the world of mixed martial arts.
Fury recently bagged the WBO, WBA, IBO, and IBF world titles against nine-year champion Wladimir Klitschko two weeks ago in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Because of the said victory, the British fighter now proclaims himself to be the "best combat fighter on the planet," so much so that he does not think that highly about MMA fighters. In his recent appearance on MMA Fighting's "The MMA Hour" show hosted by veteran journalist Ariel Helwani, Fury had one thing to say about cagefighting as a sport and its fighters.
"I think MMA is for people who can't box, basically," Fury said on "The MMA Hour."
According to Fury, the perplexing part about the sport is when the fight goes to the ground, while noting that he is all for the "stand-up, one-on-one combat" aspect.
"Sometimes they can stay on the floor quite a while before the referee says gets up before anything is going on," Fury adds. "I just like to see the strikes getting blowed: punches, kicks, knees, whatever you like. All stand-up action."
But despite his problematic statements about the sport of mixed martial arts as a whole, Fury is not closing his doors on it. The report adds that the 27-year old boxer has actually been in talks with Bellator MMA head honcho Scott Coker.
Fury has also been linked to former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez in the past, where they were pitted against each other. While the Mexican champion has not been as vocal about the proposed match-up, Fury, on the other hand, is very welcoming with the idea.
"Anytime, any place, anywhere you want me to fight their heavyweight champion, no problem," Fury told MMA Fighting. "Let's sort it out, sort out a bit of a hybrid fight and move on."
