UFC Star Conor McGregor Shocks Fans with Retirement, Rumors of Joining WWE
The Notorious MMA rocked the Ultimate Fighting Championship world Tuesday by quitting the UFC, and he did so via Twitter. UFC fans thought it was just a gimmick to draw attention to his scheduled fight with Nate Diaz on July 9 for the UFC 200. However, later that day, the UFC superstar was taken out of the main event schedule for the July battle.
It was reported that White had taken McGregor off the UFC 200 for not attending pre-fight appearances, confirming that the hottest star on Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) will not be joining the event. The UFC is now preparing for another main event.
According to White, "Obviously we still have a good relationship with Conor. I respect Conor as a fighter and I like him as a person. But you can't decide not to show up to these things. You have to do it."
The UFC president went on to stay that McGregor had been in Iceland preparing for his bout with Diaz and did not attend the press conference to promote the card because the latter had not wanted to interrupt his preparation for the upcoming fight.
An interesting development in the story came out shortly after the UFC fighter tweeted his retirement. Becky Lynch, a wrestler on World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), issued an invitation in reply to McGregor's tweet.
The issue became more intriguing when speculations came out that the UFC fighter may really be heading for WWE. Apparently, McGregor had started following four WWE wrestling stars Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, Becky Lynch, and Shane McMahon, and that he had done so after his retirement, fueling the earlier rumors.
However, these speculations were clarified when it was made clear that McGregor had only started following all four wrestlers some weeks ago during the WrestleMania 32 weekend. What's more, Stephanie McMahon and Becky Lynch also follow McGregor on Twitter, but not anytime close to the day the UFC star tweeted his retirement.
To date, there has been no word confirming McGregor transitioning to WWE. But if he should do so, it would not be the first time UFC fighters have crossed to WWE or even of WWE wrestlers going into UFC.
