Uggie Retires, Leaves Paw Prints in Hollywood
The Jack Russell terrier dog Uggie retired from "acting" but continues to leave his mark on Hollywood, literally.
Uggie became the first dog to ever leave paw prints beside stars such as Marilyn Monroe in front of Hollywood's famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre on Monday. The ceremony marked his official retirement from movies.
"Everybody thinks I am a great trainer," explained Omar von Muller during the paw print ceremony, according to Reuters. "I don't think so. I think he is just a great dog."
After cementing his paws, Uggie "autographed" DVD and Blu-ray copies of "The Artist" with ink-covered paws. The dog appeared shaken during much of the event, likely due to the large crowd and summer heat. After the hour-long event, Uggie and his trainers retreated inside the theater.
Although Uggie is the first dog to be showcased at Grauman's courtyard, three dogs- Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, and Strongheart- have stars along the nearby Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The special dog, who wore a black bow tie during Monday's event, recently starred in the Oscar-winning film "The Artist." Uggie has also appeared in "Water For Elephants" alongside Reese Witherspoon and Rob Pattinson.
Just 10 years old, Uggie's trainers announced his retirement in January.
"He may do a couple of little things here and there because he enjoys them, but I don't want to put him through long hours anymore," said Muller at the time, according to Life & Style magazine.
"He's getting tired … If somebody wants to do a movie with Uggie, they'll just have to deal with Dash," added Muller of Uggie's brother.
The talented canine earned the 2011 Palm Dog Award at the Cannes film festival and the Golden Collar Award in Los Angeles earlier this year.
Uggie's role in "The Artist" may have helped earn the film 10 Academy Award nominations. The four-legged celebrity starred alongside actors Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo, and John Goodman.
The silent, black and white film received widespread critical acclaim. In addition to the Academy Award nods, "The Artist" saw six Golden Globe nominations, winning in categories for Best Motion Picture - Musical Comedy, Best Original Score, and Best Actor.
