Ugliest Dog Dies But Will Keep Crown
The world's "ugliest dog" has died at the age of 15, but it has been announced that she will be able to officially keep her crown until a new dog is crowned later this year.
The dog called "Yoda" was a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix, and won a $1,000 prize in 2011 after winning the title as "The World's Ugliest Dog" in Petaluma, California.
The dog's owner Terry Devine Schumacher has explained that his daughter found Yoda near their old apartment 13 years ago. However, it was not love at first sight; Schumacher initially thought the dog was a rat and ordered his daughter to quickly put it down.
Yoda is described as have had a protruding tongue, short tufts of hair and skinny, bald legs.
Following the "ugliest dog" win Yoda became an instant celebrity and appeared on several television programs after her win. Although having an unusual look, many fans have argued against labeling a dog "ugly" and blogs have taken up the issue further since her death.
Despite those opposing the contest, Vicki DeArmon, the producer of the "ugliest dog" contest, said Yoda would maintain her title until a new ugliest dog is crowned when the competition is held again in June later this year.
