'Unearthing Mars' Release Date, News: Title Gets Western PS VR Launch on March 7

The realm of virtual reality (VR) is arguably one of the most ambitious ventures of gaming in current times. The west gets to experience more of the VR's untapped potential as Taipei-based Winking Entertainment introduces a new PlayStation VR title that brings players to a whole new world with "Unearthing Mars."

The title's trailer is rather enticing with how it presents the concept of gameplay. Obviously, from a first-person viewpoint, it allows the player to navigate through varying terrains of the Red Planet. Somewhere along the way, one will have to cross guns with enemies, making it a shooting platform.

What's interesting though is the last part of the teaser. An explosion enwraps the whole planet in a massive destruction that transforms what appears to be formerly a lush environment into a barren wasteland. Does this mean that the title works on the premise that Mars used to be a second Earth? This is something that fans will have to watch out for once they get their hands on the game.

As far as the game's genre is concerned, Winking Entertainment's brand manager, Eric Tsai, says it is a combination of a lot of gameplay mechanics. "So what is 'Unearthing Mars?' Is it a shooter, a puzzler, or some sort of space sim? To be honest, it is all and none of those things at the same time," Tsai explains in a PlayStation blog.

Just like what was revealed in the teaser, the first half of the game is mainly exploration either through walking or via space rover. As the story progresses, the player will have to solve puzzles and eventually fight against incoming threats. Unlike other VR titles, "Unearthing Mars" follows a storyline instead of a documentary-like experience, making it immersive.

The title was first launched in Asia on Jan. 19, 2017. "Unearthing Mars" is finally coming to the west on March 7, 2017.
