US Election 2016: Global Concern on Donald Trump's Anti-Muslim Comment
Global Concern Rises Against Trump's Muslim Ban
Donald Trump is no doubt a forthright person. He remained controversial because of his unfavorable comments, leaving citizens wonder whether it is a political strategy to gain popularity or just a mere slip of the tongue
Since his announcement of candidacy for the presidential elections, he has caught media's attention because of his comments on illegal immigration and Islamic terrorism. He has said and done things that raised doubts regarding his abilities to be the next U.S. President. How has this negative image affected his campaign progress more so with the groups he has offended?
Trump's Muslim Remarks
In November 2015, a week after the Paris attack, without hesitation, Trump called for a Muslim ban. He said he would allow a database system to track Muslims in the U.S. He further stated that some mosques will undergo surveillance as a preventive measure against Islamic terrorism. In addition, after the San Bernardino mass shooting, which was believed to be an Islamic attack, the Republican presidential candidate called for a total shutdown on Muslims entering US.
Global Concern on Proposed Muslim Ban
These statements caused mixed reactions. Muslim groups in the U.S. called Trump's ideas as unethical and unacceptable, reiterating how Muslims form an integral part in American society. They felt betrayed, considering that they also have contributed to the country's economic progess , cultural diversity and some even joined the U.S. military to protect the country.
In Indonesia, Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that the anti-Muslim comment is "discrimination according to religion". Other leaders also condemned Trump's statements and said that the Muslim ban in the U.S. is dangerous as it could affect Islamic relations not only in the West, but also in other countries that have ties with U.S., affecting economy and trade.
High Poll Rates Despite Negative Publicity
While some were worried about how his comments could negatively affect the global economy as well as peace and order, others found humor about it. They said that banning entry in the U.S. is a narrow-minded idea, adding that Trump has been saying a lot of things about everything that it actually gives an impression that he says things just to have a say
Surprisingly though, Trump's poll rate remains high despite these negative write-ups and protests against him. This goes to show that some have been captured by his straightforward comments. However, should Trump think before he speak?
