America's legendary sprinter Carl Lewis, who incidentally is the only other person apart from Bolt to successfully defend the men's 100 meter sprint Olympic title, was unable to defend his 200 meter title. Lewis won gold in the 200 meters in Los Angeles in 1984 only to lose out by just 0.04 seconds to Joseph DeLoach of the United States in Seoul in 1988.

Other sprinters close to defending the 200 meter title have been Donald Quarrie of Jamaica who only managed a bronze medal when he was attempting to defend his title. He finished just a tenth of a second behind Pietro Mennea of Italy. In Athens in 2004 Shawn Crawford of the United States won gold in the 200 meters only to lose in 2008 in Beijing as Usain Bolt sped past him.

Bolt has already broken the 100M sprint Olympic record on Sunday night in London by running 9.63 seconds. He will enter the 200M sprint as favorite, and he has cruised through the qualifying rounds for today's final.

Following today's 200 meter final he will also be taking part in the 4x100 meter relay event in the coming days as the London 2012 Olympics comes to an end.

Yohan Blake is the man most would look to if someone is going to beat Bolt today. Blake has a personal best of 19.26 seconds, just 0.07 seconds behind the world record from the World Championships in Berlin in 2009.
