'Vampire Diaries' Season 7 Release Date News: Julie Plec Talks About Shifting From Single-Character Storytelling
Julie Plec, the show co-creator and executive producer of The CW's hit fantasy drama TV series "The Vampire Diaries," dropped some major details at the network's panel on the recently-held Television Critics Association press tour.
Plec revealed that despite the heart-breaking reality of Nina Dobrev already being out of the series, the show must keep on going but with some changes to be implemented.
She said that the upcoming Season 7 will see the scripted program veering away from a single-character point of story-telling.
"In terms of the show focusing on a single character, we are going to shift from that" Plec said. "We finally have an opportunity to show off the ensemble and make them feel more like the stars of their own show."
This also gives the creative team the opportunity to refocus on the other aspect of the show which The CW boss Mike Pedowitz thinks is a good thing.
"They started last year – going into this coming season – focusing on [Ian Somerhalder's] Damon and [Paul Wesley's] Stefan. As you know, we've had great success doing shows about brothers," Pedowitz said, clearly alluding to the network's other hit series "Supernatural."
Pedowitz however said that they are not entirely closing their doors and would love to have Dobrev back.
"We would have loved Nina to stay," he said. "She did a great job for the six years she was on the show and she's welcome anytime she wants to come back."
The 26-year-old actress previously admitted she was "very torn" about leaving the series which helped her become a household name.
"I was very aware of how lucky I am – and how lucky I've been over the past six years – to have this incredible family, and [I'm] very aware of how much I'm going to miss them," she told People.com back in May.
"The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 premieres Oct. 8 on The CW.
