Veena Malik and Silk Smitha Combine in 'Dirty Picture'
Bollywood actress Veena Malik has signed on to portray Silk Smitha in India's new movie, "The Dirty Picture." The biopic previously gave Vidya Balan a National Award, and hopes are high for Malik's portrayal.
According to NDTV, the film will be completely different from its predecessor and is completely original. Trishul has signed on to direct, while Vekatappa will produce the new movie. Vekatappa has said that "Dirty Picture" will give viewers a more realistic portrayal of Silk's life.
Smitha was an actress who got her start in the 1979 film, "Vandichakkaram." Soon after, she became one of the most highly sought after actresses and performed in over 450 films. Her knowledge and fluency in South Indian languages helped her career greatly, as she was able to appear in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, and Hinid-based films.

In 1996, Smitha was found dead in her apartment after apparently committing suicide. Police closed her file in a matter of weeks, leading to speculation over whether the actress was killed or had killed herself. According to at least one source, Smitha was suffering from personal problems, including alcoholism and depression.
Now her life is again being portrayed, this time by a younger actress eager to prove herself to audiences. Veena Malik created an immediate sensation when she first modeled for FHM magazine. The Pakistani actress and model posed topless for the cover shoot, angering many in her home state.
She recently stated that she would "think about" posing for Playboy if the opportunity came up. "Why would I say no? It's a great opportunity. I'd definitely go for that," she told the British Mirror. "That is my job. I am a model, and I would consider every single opportunity that comes my way."
Her image so angered conservative groups that one, Lashkar-e-Taiba, a militant group behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks, issued a public statement threatening punishment. "She has made fun of all Muslim women and brought shame to the entire nation," the group said. "Veena Malik will be dealt with according on her return to Pakistan."
Malik scared fans when, after receiving several death threats and letters written in blood, she disappeared. She soon resurfaced, telling everyone that she was merely "resting."
