'Veep' Season 7 News, Air Date: Julia Louis-Dreyfus Explains Decision to End Series
The upcoming seventh season of HBO's "Veep" will be its last.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the decision to end the series after its seventh season came about organically. Star Julia Louis-Dreyfus and showrunner David Mandel both determined that it was time to close the series.
"It became clear that this season should be the last season," Louis-Dreyfus explained. "We don't want to repeat ourselves or wear out our welcome. The story has a finality to it that feels end-of-series."
In August earlier this year, the writers of the show were just beginning to come up with stories and outline the season. A month later, it looks like the whole season 7 arc has been fleshed out and the timing feels right.
"It was just a very natural thing. We don't want to repeat ourselves or be boring," Mandel told THR. "It's bittersweet but it's right."
The upcoming season is expected to follow Selina (Louis-Dreyfus) as she campaigns to become the next president of the United States. More people, including the ones who work for her, believe in her capability to win now more than ever due to her freeing of Tibet becoming public knowledge.
It is unknown whether Selina will end up in the Oval Office, though. She has already been president once, but it did not last long. This time, she is looking for a real chance at a full term. Following advice, Selina had to break up with Jaffar (Usman Ally) in order to make her a more appealing candidate against Jonah (Timothy Simons). But that does not mean fans have seen the last of Jaffar.
Production on season 7 will begin on Oct. 16. As usual, there will only be 10 episodes in the season. And while Mandel said that they were willing to make the final season longer, the need never arose.
"If we needed five more [episodes], everybody was open to five more," Mandel said.
"Veep" season 7 will premiere in 2018 on HBO.
