'VeggieTales in the House' Co-Creator Tells History of Popular Series
Phil Vischer is one of the co-creators of the immensely successful "VeggieTales" films and now, a new series on Netflix.
The series, which released on Nov. 26, has been receiving a great deal of interest and enthusiasm from fans, and Vischer spoke with The Christian Post about the updated show which focuses on bringing the vegetables, including icons Bob and Larry, together in a new, Netflix-exclusive release.
Each episode has a unique storyline, song, and the characters have all received makeovers. So far, Vischer and his teammates have recorded over 50 episodes for the over 30 million Netflix subscribers, which he hopes will expand the audience and introduce children to the creation that garnered critical acclaim.
"It's fun to see it–20 years ago when I started with it, it was VHS cassettes. And then it went to DVD and now it's like in your pocket, so it's interesting to see the technology change, the characters change and how they can be with children every day," Vischer said to CP.
In the 1980s, Vischer wanted to be able to tell unique stories but keep it relatively simple. He started out with a candy bar design but was warned by his wife that mothers may get mad. That's how "Mr. Cuke" was born … he was eventually replaced with the character known as Larry, whose best friend just happens to be Bob the tomato (voiced by Vischer).
Today, "VeggieTales" is one of the most popular Christian shows for youth and has sold over 72 million videos and 15 million books around the world. Each character works to tell a story based on a Biblical text as it relates to modern-day scenarios. Bob the tomato serves as the story-teller and at times, the voice of reason for his fellow vegetables.
"VeggieTales in the House," as well as a whole host of videos, is currently available through Netflix.
