Venus Williams Defeats Kimiko Date-Krumm at Wimbledon
Venus Williams prevailed over Japan’s Kimiko Date-Krumm, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 8-6, on Wednesday to advance to the third round of the Wimbledon Championships.
The nearly three-hour-long match started off with Williams, who has five Wimbledon singles championship titles to her name, struggling and losing the first set. The hard-fought game saw both women refusing to yield and battling for every point.
“She just played so well as every ball hit the line and the baseline,” commented Williams, 23rd seed, after her win.
Williams is returning to the court after nearly five months away due to a hip injury. She will next play either Spain’s Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez or Romania’s Monica Niculescu in the third round.
Date-Krumm, 40, is the second oldest woman to reach the second round of Wimbledon.
