Waiter Stunned After $5000 Tip Left For $27 Meal
A generous couple stunned restaurant workers after leaving their waiter a $5000 tip for their $27 lunch.
The couple, who are said to be regular diners at D'Amico's in Rice Village., Houston, handed Greg Rubar $5000 in cash on Saturday after learning that he had lost his car in a severe storm several weeks ago, according to MSNBC.
"People can be generous. They told me I deserved it," said Rubar. "It's overwhelming to me," Rubar told NBC news.
"He said, 'We're still going to come in, but we're not going to tip you for a while.' He said this is for you to go and buy a nice car," he added.
The loss of Rubar's car forced him to catch cabs and buses to work, which evidently prompted the couple to help him out.
Brina D'Amico Donaldson, a co-owner of the restaurant, was extremely surprised after learning about Rubar's tip, but insisted that the waiter, who has worked at D'Amico's for 16 years, deserved it.
"It was a bit shocking to hear that. I was like, maybe $500, but $5,000 is quite a generous tip," D'Amico Donaldson said.
"He's an incredibly hard worker. He would work every shift if we would let him," she added.
This is not the first time that a waiter has received an exorbitant tip. Actor Johnny Depp once left a $3,000 tip for a $5,120 bill after dining at a Wisconsin restaurant.
President Barack Obama recently left an $18 tip for a $2 beer, after dining with Mayor Bloomberg at a Manhattan diner.
In November of 2009, Beyonce and her husband, Jay-Z, left a $500 tip on a $1200 bill after dining the upscale restaurant Nello's, which is located in the upper east side of New York.
Rubar said that he plans to honor the anonymous couple's wishes and will use the money to buy himself a brand new car.
