War Machine Apologizes in Tweet After Justifying Rape Comments: I Was 'Insensitive,' Says MMA Fighter
Mixed martial arts fighter Jonathan Koppenhaver made an official apology on Twitter over the weekend after making jokes about rape.
The MMA fighter-- best known by his moniker "War Machine"-- was hit with a backlash of negative comments on Twitter after he jokingly posted that he had "raped" his girlfriend. It was revealed in June the Koppenhaver was in a relationship with adult entertainer Christy Mack.
"Just raped @ChristyMack She tried to make me wait until 'after errands' As if," Koppenhaver wrote on Twitter Friday afternoon. But even after fans began to complain about the comment, Koppenhaver stood his ground. "Apparently you idiots didn't read my tweet prior to the one y'all are crying about, it puts it in the right context," he argued accusing others of being overly "sensitive."
"In what context is raping gf's and wives the right one???" one user said in response.
The mixed martial arts pro continued to state his case and complain that he was being "demonized." But within hours, it appears he had a change of heart. In a later tweet, Koppenhaver apologized for being so careless with his words.
"I tweeted something earlier that was stupid, insensitive and wrong. Rape is never something to joke about ever. I sincerely apologize," he wrote. The fighter's girlfriend also stepped in, in his defense admitting that Koppenhaver at times said "stupid things."
"To be clear, @WarMachine170 says stupid things at times; we all know this. He did not rape me, nor would he rape any woman (or man)," she wrote.
Koppenhaver has legal troubles in the past, mostly stemming from physical altercations. In 2010 he was arrested under suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. He was also arrested a year before that for pushing a bar owner and destroying several glasses in the bar. He also allegedly pushed a woman on his way out the door.
