WCC Executive Committee to Install General Secretary
The World Council of Churches will formally install their new general secretary, as part of their executive committee annual conference, Feb. 17-20, 2004. Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia, who took up his new post in January, will be officially instated during a service in the Ecumenical Centre chapel on Wednesday.
Following the ceremony, Kobia will lead an executive committee presentation of WCC work on HIV/AIDS and on public issues.
Delegates will learn to “fully appreciate and take on board the intensive work on the issue undertaken over the past year by the WCC Health and Healing desk,” according to the WCC.

The council’s main involvement is with the Ecumenical HIV/AIDS Initiative in Africa (EHAIA), and other regional and global HIV/AIDS activities that seeks to prepare faith communities in handling the deadly virus in the future.
The committee will subsequently review preparations for the council’s ninth assembly in Porto Alegre, Brazil in2006. It will decide how many delegates member churches are to send to the assembly; for each church, that number will be based on membership figures submitted on or before 31 January 2004
In addition, the committee will also consider actions on public issues such as analyzing nuclear disarmament, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the situation in Sudan, Zimbabwe, India & Pakistan.
In its supervisory role, the executive committee will review overall WCC work since its last, August 2003, meeting, the council's financial situation, and organizational questions that, in this case, will include procedures for applying a consensus model of reaching decisions.
