WEA Head to Join Rally to End Darfur Genocide

The head of the World Evangelical Alliance is speaking up for Darfur citizens on Sunday at the Save Darfur Rally.

WASHINGTON – Days away from the Capitol rally to stop the genocide in Darfur, the head of the World Evangelical Alliance is speaking out in support of efforts to end the genocide that has resulted in the displacement of 2.5 million people.

WEA International Director Geoff Tunnicliffe is among the speakers at the “SAVE DARFUR: Rally to Stop Genocide” this Sunday at the National Mall. Tens of thousands of concerned citizens are expected to join in the rally at the Capitol to urge the U.S. government to “end violence, build the peace, and Save Darfur NOW.”

“The Bible makes it very clear; we must take a stand with those who are voiceless and powerless,” said Tunnicliffe in a statement released by WEA on Monday. “Today we stand with the Darfur people and speak out loudly against the outrageous atrocities to which they are being subjected.”

The upcoming rally is organized by the Save Darfur Coalition, an alliance of more than 155 faith-based, humanitarian and human rights organizations. The event is part of the “Million Voices for Darfur” campaign to generate one million postcards for delivery to President Bush, who recently pledged to push for additional U.N. and NATO help to protect the people of Darfur. Organizers of the rally hope to bring change to the Darfur situation by placing public pressure on the White House and Congress.

“As Evangelical Christians, we are committed to the authority of the Bible,” said Tunnicliffe in his call to Christians to speak up for Darfur citizens. “We call upon the 420 million evangelicals Christians in the world to join with others in responding to the biblical exhortation of Proverbs 31:8-9: Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

Others scheduled to speak at the Save Darfur rally include Nobel Prize laureate Elie Wiesel, U.S. Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Frank Wolf, Donald M. Payne, Michael E. Capuano, President of the Southern Baptist Convention Ethics and Religious Liberties Commission Dr. Richard Land, and U.S. Olympic Team speed skater Joey Cheek.
