'Westworld' Season 2 Release Date, Plot Rumors: Upcoming Season to Reveal More Host Details; Jimmi Simpson Not Returning?

Unlike most series that are coming back later this year with a new season, HBO's hit sci-fi offering "Westworld" will not be due out until next year. And while fans eagerly await details about the show's second season, the rumor mill has begun to turn, with the latest one hinting on the unlikely return of one major character from season 1.

Jimmi Simpson, who played series protagonist, William, may not be back for the show's sophomore run. In an interview with Cinemablend, Simpson revealed that his involvement with the upcoming season remains unclear. The actor, like most fans, speculated that what's coming next for "Westworld" would be an entirely different narrative, one that might not have anything more to offer to William's storyline.

But Simpson, who claimed that "Westworld" was the greatest set he has worked on, has not completely given up hope of rejoining the show's cast in the future.

"I wouldn't be surprised if William showed up season 3 or something," Simpson said.

As for what the second season will be about, series creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the series would be focusing on more details about the workings of a host.

"Their construction and their power source is something we're really going to get into during season 2," Nolan shared, adding that the answer is much more biological than it is mechanical and that a host's brain does not require oxygen like a human brain does, which Nolan said, would open up a whole world of possibilities for the series.

As for its delayed airing, HBO's programming president Casey Bloys told Entertainment Weekly in another interview that given the show's huge production set and everything else that goes into shooting each scene in it, he would not expect the second season to roll around until 2018

The wait may be long and confirmed information scarce, but speculations and theories will keep pouring as the countdown to "Westworld" season 2 carries on.
