Several years before my father died, he wrote my sister and me a letter. In it he detailed things like the specifics about titles to the house and cars. He listed all insurance policy and bank account numbers, with the hope that we would never have to use this information.
Once my dad passed away, and I couldn't speak with him or see him everyday, I can't begin to tell you how much more valuable this information became. I treasured every word and every piece of advice my dad left behind. His love and concern for me became even more apparent as I ingested the loving kindness of my dad who wanted me not only to know, but understand how much he cared for me.
As Moses, for one last time spoke to the children of Israel, he had a great longing to underscore the love God had for all His children. And so, as Beam #2, we find that Moses encouraged the people to: "Accept God's Word."
Moses didn't want the children of Israel to do what a lot of us do. We hear something and say, "Yes, yes!" But, what we really let happen is that the advice goes in one ear and out the other. Moses informed the people that they should "accept" the Word of God, or as the Hebrew states: "Be pleased with, have affection for, delight in and take pleasure in." When God speaks, we don't just listen. Instead, we accept into ourselves what He is saying. God's Word becomes part of us. In fact, the Apostle Paul, in his second letter to Timothy, his son in the gospel, told this young man, "God's Word is not chained" (2 Timothy 2:9). What this means is that God's Word isn't fettered, held back or restrained. As one unknown author penned: "Give me a candle and a Bible, and shut me up in a dark dungeon, and I will tell you what the whole world is doing." This is what happens when we accept God's Word. Like seeds of truth implanted in the fertile soil of our lives, God's message to each of us takes root. As we continue to study, beautiful lush plants begin to bloom laden with flowers that delight our hearts and bring enriching joy to every part of our lives .
President Woodrow Wilson observed that, "When you have read the Bible you will know that it is the Word of God, because you will have found in it the key to your own heart, your own happiness, your own duty."
The sturdy Beam #2 in a life well-lived is the acceptance of God's Word. It is an acceptance that means I take in what God says and let it permeate every fiber of my being. The Word becomes an integral part of my life every day and infuses me with joy and delight in my Father. As David the Psalmist so beautifully wrote: "I will delight myself in Your statues; I will not forget Your word" (Psalm 119: 16, Amplified Bible).
