News Corp's Cash Cows, What are They?
The phone hacking scandal that originated with the News of the World tabloid in the U.K. has sent shock waves all throughout the News Corp media conglomerate around the world.
However, for the last decades, media baron Rupert Murdoch has turned News Corp into a vast media empire that stands today as the second largest media conglomerate in the world.
With that in mind, the question that follows is, "From where does NewsCorp make its money?"
According to a CNN report, News Corp's overall operating income came in from the following divisions:
Cable Networks: $2.54 billion, 55 percent of the overall operating income
Film/TV: $1.1 billion, 24 percent of the overall operating income
Publishing: $997 million, 22 percent of the overall operating income
News Corp's cable networks include Fox News and Sports Channels, and the National Geographic channel, as well as a dozen others.
Its Film and TV division include 20th Century Fox, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Blue Sky Studious, among others.
Its Publishing division in the U.S may best be known by the Dow Jones Company that produces The Wall Street Journal, the leading U.S. financial newspaper, the New York Post and other prints such as Barron's and MarketWatch (website).
The phone hacking scandal may cause a backlash on the publishing divisions of News Corp, but the effect it will have on its cable networks and film and TV divisions are not as clear.
