Whatever Happened to the Party of the Little Guy?

I grew up in a family that had its politics rooted in the Democratic Party. My father, an evangelical pastor, bred into me the principle that one's Christian faith mandates a duty to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to care for the homeless, and to provide Christian charity to those in need.

In short, I was taught that the identification badge of people of genuine authentic faith is that they truly care for the little guy, the disenfranchised. That was why my father was a proud Democrat.

I don't believe that he would have such a political affiliation today.

Times have definitely and dramatically changed. The "party of the little guy" has lost its way on sanctity of life and the issue of abortion — the littlest, and most vulnerable, of all human beings. This was made starkly clear last week as Democrats approved the most pro-abortion platform in U.S. history.

"We will continue to oppose — and seek to overturn – federal and state laws and policies that impede a woman's access to abortion, including by repealing the Hyde Amendment."

If this one line is implemented into law, taxpayers will be on the hook to pay for millions of abortions. Democrats seek to overturn 40 years of bipartisan history that has been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court and is overwhelmingly supported by the American public. Perhaps most importantly, the platform represents a reversal on abortion by the Democratic Party's 2016 standard bearer, Hillary Clinton.

In the 1990s, Clinton and her husband, then-President Bill Clinton, declared they wanted abortion to be "safe, rare, and legal." She reiterated this belief during her 2008 run for the White House.

But in 2016, Clinton has clearly abandoned "rare." She backs taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood — a favor they returned by endorsing her. Clinton also supports partial-birth and late-term abortion, despite widespread public opposition to both.

Clinton's reversal is perhaps most evident in how her husband sat next to Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards at the Democratic Convention this week in a public display of the affection that exists between the Clintons and the world's foremost provider of abortion. Apparently, the recent scandals of the vile abortion practices of Planned Parenthood, as shown in 12 undercover videos, are not a problem for Democrats or their nominee for president.

Abortion, unlike the specified fundamental freedoms in the Bill of Rights, is not mentioned in the Constitution. As a constitutional right, it was invented by the Supreme Court in 1973. The Roe v. Wade decision was in the words of dissenting Justice Byron White, an exercise of "raw judicial power." It has divided the nation unlike any other issue since the days of slavery. Even many Democrats originally opposed this decision.

So whatever happened to the party of the little guy — a party that used to proudly stand for the rights of the underprivileged?

In regards to the most vulnerable of our human family, today's Democratic Party is no longer an advocate. It has become a bully that forces taxpayers to pay for the deaths of these little ones who haven't seen the light of day.

The America envisioned by the new Democratic Party is one which funds abortion-on-demand at any time during pregnancy for any reason. It is an America that through the force of law mandates that people violate their religious convictions. It is a nation that disrespects those who because of such convictions have committed their very lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to restore respect for all human life in our nation — the born, the unborn, handicapped, and the dying.

Is this the America that we the people truly desire? I don't believe so.

Deep within the heart of America there still lies a conscience that I hope will bring a backlash against this inhuman vision. The soul of our nation, and who we really are, will be revealed this November.
