White Castle Sued by Customer for Being Unable to Fit in Seats, Tweeters React
A New York stockbroker who can no longer fit into the booth at White Castle is suing the burger chain for not making seats big enough to fit his frame.
“They’re stationary booths,” Martin Kessman, 64, told the New York Post. “I’m not humongous, [but] I’m a big guy. I could not wedge myself in.”
In April, 2009, Kessman, who weighs 290 pounds, tried to sit down after ordering his meal and found he couldn’t fit in any of the restaurant’s seats. But he is able to fit in seats at other fast-food places and airplane seats, so figured it must be White Castle’s seat designs that are the problem.
But when Kessman wrote letters to White Castle asking for bigger seats, they simply responded with “very condescending letters” and coupons for free hamburgers, but cheese would be extra.
Kessman was so humiliated that he refused to go into a White Castle – but still ate the food.
“My wife went and picked up the burgers ... because I did not want to set foot into the store,” he said. “Any subsequent trips to the store have been made by my wife -- I have been like an outcast.”
The story has caught the attention of the internet with hundreds of people commenting and tweeting about it.
On Twitter, the comments have mostly been against Kessman.
@FakeCinEnquirer jokes, “Man Sues White Castle Because He Can't Fit In Seats. Even if he wins this lawsuit, he has already lost.”
@mdkail referred to the lawsuit as “Today's sign of the apocalypse.”
@jefftaylor2 took issue with Kessman using the Americans with Disabilities Act to sue. “Being overweight is NOT a disability! Shameful,” he tweeted.
Others felt that the lawsuit as a good sign that Kessman should just lose some weight.
@mochammut said, “I think White Castle should settle with this guy by getting him a gym membership.”
But despite the lawsuits and the jokes, all Kessman wants is to be able to enjoy White Castle hamburgers inside a White Castle.
“I just want to sit down like a normal person,” he said.
