Robert Wright
The Rt. Rev. Robert Wright of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, the first African American bishop of the Georgia-based regional body, is one of the nominees for presiding bishop.
Born at a Roman Catholic orphanage in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and adopted at nine months old, Wright enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school and was a helicopter crew chief.
According to his official biography, Wright graduated with a history and political science degree from Howard University and then earned a master of divinity degree from Virginia Theological Seminary. He later received honorary doctorates from VTS, the School of Theology at Sewanee, The University of the South and the General Theological Seminary.
Wright also lectures at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, serves on the Habitat for Humanity International board, and oversees a podcast titled "For People" with more than 300,000 downloads.
Before being elected bishop in 2012, Wright served for 10 years as the rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Atlanta.
He is married to Beth-Sarah Wright. They have five children.
