Trump selected former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee to serve as the U.S. ambassador to Israel. Huckabee served as lieutenant governor of Arkansas before elevating to the governorship after his predecessor resigned. He won the governorship in his own right in both 1998 and 2002. He also launched two unsuccessful bids for the Republican nomination for president, first in 2008 and a second in 2016

Huckabee dropped out during the primaries in 2008 after then-Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., secured enough delegates to clinch the Republican nomination while ending his campaign immediately after a poor showing in the Iowa caucuses eight years later.

In an X post announcing Huckabee’s proposed role in his administration, Trump said, “He loves Israel, and the people of Israel, and likewise, the people of Israel love him.” He insisted that “Mike will work tirelessly to bring about Peace in the Middle East!”

Huckabee has visited Israel on an annual basis for decades, identifying the Holy Land as “a land I have been visiting since 1973 when I was a teenager” in a statement reacting to his nomination.
