Why Parents May Avoid ‘Puss in Boots’ In Theaters Friday

Parents and viewers of this week's movie release, "Puss in Boots" have expressed disappointment and concern over the adult humor and content found in the film.

While critics expect the DreamWorks and Paramount film to do well this weekend at the box office, some parents disagree.

A concerned mother of three and pre-school teacher Katherine Jones from Peoria, Arizona told The Christian Post that "Puss in Boots" was "the last thing I would take my kids to see."

Upon viewing the film, Jones described the main character as "a conceited, Don Juan type cat."

Eyebrows have been raised in the past over made-for-children movies that contain adult humor and inappropriate material. Matters such as why some characters choose to cover their animated private parts while others go pantless are listed as concerns in "Puss in Boots."

Jones added that the character was "a flirtatious and over-sexualized animal in boots," and quipped that unless the moral of the story warned about safe sex, than her kids would even still remain too young for its audience target.

"There is enough sex in the media, does it really have to be in movies targeting little kids too," Jones asked.

The film title is also the name of the main character that was featured in the DreamWorks' blockbuster "Shrek." Charles Perrault wrote the tale of a devious and the clever cat during the seventeenth century in France and it remains largely successful.

Featured under the placard Mother Goose Tales, Puss in Boots is internationally known character. The puss in boots also appears in the third act of Tchaikovsky's ballet The Sleeping Beauty, and makes many other media appearances.

Hollywood stars Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas, Billy Bob Thornton, and Zach Galifianakis lend their voices to the film, which hit theaters everywhere Friday.

Speaking to NewsOK, Salma Hayek discussed the difficult task parents have in selecting films for their children to see, and how they are often "nervous" and hesitant to visit the movie theater. The actress did not express any qualms with the content of her new film, and urged parents to see it with their children.

"['Puss in Boots'] is definitely worth taking your kids and seeing on the big screen," said Hayek.

Interestingly, she added that adults would enjoy the movie as well as the kids- which offer beliefs that the film's content is too mature for young audiences support.

"I would recommend this film because grownups are gonna have as much fun as their kids and it could be a great family experience where everybody can enjoy and have fun," said Hayek.

"Puss in Boots" is rated P-G and available for viewing in 3D.
