Will and Jada Smith Offer Marriage Advice, Dispel Divorce Rumors

Before rumors swirled about Will Smith separating from his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, the actor gave marriage advice to those looking to preserve a 13-year union such as his.

Earlier in the summer, Smith told Essence Magazine about marriage from a male perspective. Smith told the magazine that men wanted to marry women that they could view as friends.

“A lot of women will impress them, but it’s the one they can always laugh with and be themselves with that will ultimately impress them the most,” Smith said in the interview. “If you can be yourselves around each other, 100 percent of the time, and they can make you life like no one else can, you’ll never have a dull moment together.”

The actor and musician said it is also important to give your significant other adequate space after they come home from a long day at work.

“If you don’t give your husband thirty minutes to himself when he first gets home he’ll stop coming home,” Smith told the interviewer.

Many have looked toward the marriage of the entertainment focused couple after reports surfaced that they split on Tuesday.

In an interview with Piers Morgan in June, Jada Pinkett-Smith said it is important to ignore other people’s thoughts about her marriage.

“You have to look at your marriage and understand what is needed in your marriage, not what people think your marriage should be and not what people want your marriage to be.” Pinkett-Smith said in the interview. “You need to look at your husband and see what he needs and your husband needs to look at his wife and see what she needs, and the two of you need to look at the union and see what the union needs, not what other people think.”

Despite their ability to ignore what others thought of their marriage, the Smiths thought it important to release a joint statement today to dispel any myths about any potential divorce or split.

“Although we are reluctant to respond to these types of press reports, the rumors circulating about our relationship are completely false,” a joint statement from the Smiths read on Essence. “We are still together, and our marriage is intact.”
