Will Kim Kardashian's Marriage Follow Star Jones or Zeta-Jones?
When a wedding earns the newlyweds $17 million, questions about the authenticity of the vows are bound to arise. And although the Kardashian/Humphries wedding is by far one of the most profitable wedding spectacles in history, it is not the only celebrity wedding that earned a lot of money. Unfortunately, few of them lasted very long.
One of the big reasons the Kardashian/Humphries wedding earned the couple so much money was from the wedding’s advertising power. While being taped for an E! mini-series, product placement was everywhere. With high-profile celebrity guests sure to be in just about every shot with the Kardashians, having a brand along with them is able to fetch a lot of advertising dollars.
Star Jones did something similar, if a little more complicated and legally questionable, prior to her 2004 wedding with Al Reynolds. Jones, who received many offers from companies to use their products in her wedding ceremony, including invitations, bridesmaids’ gowns, and even an airline (Continental was the “official airline” of Jones’ wedding), allegedly mentioned some of the companies whose products were being used at her wedding on The View, USA Today reported, which would have violated federal regulations that prohibit on-air mentions in return for gifts.
After Jones and Reynolds divorced less than four years later in 2008, many of the vendors asked to be refunded for their “gifts,” arguing that breaking their vows was a breach of contract.
Another celebrity couple who agreed to have their marriage made into a miniseries like Kardashian and Humphries was former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Dave Navarro and ex-Playboy model Carmen Electra, whose wedding was produced by MTV and made into a miniseries entitled “Til Death Do Us Part” in 2004.
The rock star and the cover girl parted well before death in 2006.
But making money off your wedding is not always a sign of divorces to come. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas famously sold the exclusive rights to their wedding photos to British tabloid OK! Magazine for over $1 million in 2000. And eleven years later, Zeta-Jones and Douglas are still married.
So who will Kim Kardashian have more in common with? Star Jones or Zeta-Jones?
