Will 'Lego Worlds' Rival 'Minecraft'?

"Minecraft," the popular open-world building game of game developer Mojang remains on top of the game despite many competitors and imitators. But this dominance may be challenged soon, with the release of a new open-world building by Lego, one of the originators of building games in toy history, called "Lego Worlds."

The game has been initially released on Steam Early Access as an "alpha build" which means that players can provide feedback to the game's developers so that further improvements and additional features can be added.

The game is published by Warner Bros. Interactive and developed by Traveller's Tales Games, the same one that developed "Lego Dimensions."

According to a report in Tech Times, the game is "an open world canvas where players can create anything they want with the game's digital building tools." Players can play as a Minifigure that can be customized, and given Lego's access to licensed content from Disney, Star Wars and Marvel, the choices of Minifigures are immense.

When a player enters a world for the first time, it is "procedurally generated" and made entirely out of Lego blocks. What is notable is that everything the player sees can be manipulated, changed and destroyed if needed. There are special in-game tools that help in construction, including large shape ones that generate bricks of different sizes. According to TT Games, each world has new Minifigures, vehicles and classic Lego buildings, which can be found when exploring the world.

A report in The Guardian says that the initial worlds included in this early version of the game are based on existing Lego playsets. As the game is finalized, additional specialized biomes such as deserts and tundras will be added as well.

The current version of the game does not have an online multiplayer mode yet, but the developer is saying that this will be added soon, especially if they want to offer serious competition to "Minecraft."

Players can access the game on Steam Early Access for $15, but Warner Bros. has yet to reveal how the final version of the game will be priced. The game will remain on Steam until the end of 2015 with regular updates, with a release date of the final game slated within 2016.
