Windows 10 Mobile New Build 10136: What's New?

Building up to the release of the mobile version of its latest operating system sometime after the Windows 10 for PC release in end July, Microsoft has released the latest build for its Windows 10 Mobile operating system.

Called build 10136, it boasts of significant improvements in the Cortana app, the Photos app, with a few "minor design changes." The new build however is not available to all Windows Phone users, but limited to Windows Insider fast ring users. The Windows Insider program allows Microsoft users to sign up in order to get early access to new builds of Windows operating system which were originally only available to developers.

The other catch is that those who want use this build need to be using Windows Phone 8.1. If a user previously installed another build 10080 which was released earlier, they need to revert to Windows Phone 8.1 before installing the new build. They need to run the Windows Phone Recovery Tool in order to do this.

The Tech Times report also emphasized a warning issued by Microsoft when installing the new build. Once installation is done, the Lock Screen will appear frozen and will stay so for up to 10 minutes. Users must wait it out and not do anything until the date and time eventually appears. Only then can they attempt to unlock their phone. If they do otherwise, this could make their device useless.

Among the improvements noted in the new build is with the Cortana app. According to a blog post, Cortana is now "very close" to its final design. First off, it now has a better and more "cohesive" interface, along with new functions such as tracking flights and packages and improved functions such as receiving answers for questions, currency or weather information, or stock quotes, etc.

With regards to the Photos app, its improvements include a better and more efficient way of accessing previous photos – tapping on a month, for example, will show a list of months so users can find photos they took previously. For Lumia phones, having the new build means that they will make use of the Lumia Camera Beta app as their default camera app.

For phablet users of Windows Phones, the new build is said to feature some refinements to make one-handed use possible. For larger display phones, users only need to press and hold the Start button so that the screen can slide down and they can reach icons at the top of the screen.

User experience is also an area that Microsoft wants to improve on and this is apparent in the new build, according to the report.
