'Winds of Winter': Will George R.R. Martin Stick to the 2018 Deadline?

Fans of George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy series "A Song of Ice and Fire" are still waiting for the new updates on the release of its sixth novel.

In a July update via the author's LiveJournal blog, he denied the rumors that he was already finished with the manuscript and was withholding it for some reasons. According to Martin, he was no closer to wrapping up "The Winds Of Winter." He said it would probably take several months before the public can get their hands on the new Westeros book. The author also mentioned that a 2018 release might be possible. Aside from the "WOW" novel, he teased about the first installment of the "Fire and Blood" series, which might also be unveiled next year.

"I know you all want to know about 'The Winds Of Winter' too. I've seen some truly weird reports about WOW on the Internet of late, by 'journalists' who make their stories up out of whole cloth. ... I am still working on it, I am still months away (how many? good question), I still have good days and bad days, and that's all I care to say. Whether WINDS or the first volume of FIRE AND BLOOD will be the first to hit the bookstores is hard to say at this juncture, but I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018," Martin teased.

Meanwhile, viewers of HBO's "Game of Thrones" will have to wait until 2019 to see the next installment. It has been announced that it would take about a year and a half to finish the filming for season 8. Production has reportedly started this October and would probably end in September 2018.

The trailer, according to speculations, will likely be released during the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2018. Some of the rumored storylines involve Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) taking her place on the Iron Throne and her marriage to Jon (Kit Harrington).
